Windows Server R2 RC0 released

Windows Server R2 RC0 has been released. Talk about a cryptic title! The R2 is an upgrade to Windows Server 2003 SP1 that adds a ton of enterprise features (thus the “rev 2″ title) and the first CTP has been put on the web.

You can register to download it here but please keep in mind that this is a CTP, RC0, alpha, beta… pick your word for broken and there you are. Do not roll this onto a production system.

Why R2? Well it includes improved branch office server solutions, identity and access management and storage management and the thing I’ve been raving about: SharePoint TrustBridge technology that allows different companies to share parts of their SharePoint sites with other SharePoint sites. You could syndicate your content to your business partners SharePoint web and integrate your information. Very cool.

I’m curious to see how much of R2 technology is going to Vista Server? We have no plans to install this interrim server release point as it just seems like they are charging me for the “service pack” that solves some issues..

After your post on VS R2 I’m inclined not to trust R2 anything and have made the same recommendation to everyone else.

I just went through the process and you need to have Windows 2003 SP1 Trial before you can upgrade to RC0 trial. Both are available for download but it doesn’t appear like it can be installed on a live 2003 server.

So the R2 is not going to be free? What about SBS?????

No, this is not going to be a free upgrade, you’ll need to buy the new server license. I am not sure what kind of upgrade incentive Microsoft will make available.

Also of note is that the R2 is not exactly the server to upgrade to for everyone.. there are a lot of things in there that solve a number of problems with site-to-site data replication, unifying different AD forests, SAN technology… Its an incrimental technology, not a patch or service pack so for most it won’t be an issue.

I was at a presentation by Rene Alamo last week and he did mention that R2 for SBS will also include the ability to filter my documents folder redirection so you don’t get your users flooding your server with mp3′s or video files. That, in addition to SharePoint sharing may be a worthy upgrade depending on price and your needs of course.
