Inside SBS: Transition Pack to Lower Fidelity

Podcast

Inside SBS podcast folks decided excellent sound quality just was not working out for their show so they've gone back to Live Meeting. Join Mark, Peter, Damian or Justin (whoever gets punished into podcasting this week) to find out what happens when you outgrow your SBS. It's this Wednesday, Feb 22, live at 11:00 AM CST. Phone number for the live call-in portion of the podcast: (866) 500-6738 and use participant code: 7508158. Now a slight self-serving message: I'll be in Dallas next Friday, if time permits I'll go and see if they would be interested in recording another podcast at the Buffalo Wing House accross the street. Why am I asking you? Well, we're trying to figure out how to cash in on the average of 18,000-20,000 of you that listen to the SBS Show during its first week of release. So I'll be up front about this: How much would you pay to hear Microsoft PSS after 5 beers? 10?

I’d pay for at least one of those beers!

this, of course, assumes you don’t lock yourself in the cage again there, monkey boy.

PSS drinking and podcasting…. can it be done any other way?

I believe I have just been motivated to podcast!

I’ve wondered how you can keep on giving these away for free, SBS Show has to be pretty expensive with the type of traffic you’re getting.

Vlad |

Oh, like you would not believe. Assuming that both Chris, Susanne and my time is free the show still costs between $1-2,000 during the first week, $3-5k a week over the course of the first few weeks. As a matter of fact, because of their popularity SBS Shows 1-4 are still fetching 50-200 shows a day each.

Why not make the SBS Show $0.99 with perhaps a $20 quarterly description option - send me a CD. I’m probably one of those that trails, I have just listened to the show with Susan Bradley, so this would be awesome for me and really save a lot of time.

Think about it. As for drunk PSS guys, I already get that for free with the critical business down support so I would not finance that, no.

Vlad |

Scott,

That is probably the best suggestion so far. We have looked at a few solutions but to be quite honest my existing lines of business have been so busy I have not thought about being the boss (not to mention the creative, editing, monkey and janitor) of yet another business. Then there are issues of compensating talent (ie: Chris, Susanne) and so on and so forth. I wish I had time to think about all that, so far I have not.

Chris though did some very elementary math on what the show costs over the course of the year…. and let me just say that its a lot more than I thought. In the short term, this is for the benefit of SBS users and consultants out there. However, in the long term it has to cover at least a part of the bills because the out-of-pocket is insane.

and by elementary…he means i had to take off my shoes and socks to add it all up.

i guess this means i’ll finally have to stop stuttering too.

oh man…

Jess |

Could you imagine drunk support?

“Alright, here is what you do to fix that BSOD issue. First, its a driver or inaccessible boot device, something like that. So what you need is some boots - got boots? ok, good. Now, you gotta drive. Ok, put the computer in the car… yes, in boots.. yes, and drive it back to dell. No, I dont know where it is, somewhere in Texas. Drive it to me? No, I don’t wear boots. No, I’m not closer than Texas”

On the other hand, 20,000 more people know what you do for a living and it’s not just 20,000 random people, it’s SBSers. If each one sends you a client or two then it’s well worth it.

Vlad |

Amy,

I’m not allowed to talk about my company specifically on the SBS Show.

Chris,

Stutter all you want man.

I’d pay $0.99 to $1.99 for the show, or perhaps an annual subscription with a big discount?

Look, an average crappy tech book costs $40-60, I cannot argue for a single book that has helped me more than the SBS Show.

$0.02

BobB |

Annual subscription, thats all I can say. Just password protect the RSS feed and let me pay for it once and gtet it through my iTunes all year long. I’m getting all of my media through that already to the point that I will likely just close my premium cable.

Annual fee, charge a $1 a show and stick it on iTunes!

Mark Stanfill |

We should record a SBS Show/Inside SBS simulcast after a couple of beers. Topic: “Swig migration”.

And, for the record, the LiveMeeting is only to allow callers to participate - we gave up on the thrill of 8K recording a long time ago :)

Cindy Greenman |

Thats a HUGE audience. To be honest though, I would rather pay for the SBS Show than be forced to sit through ads. If you could work out shipping a CD every month too that would be even better.

$1 is on its way for your efforts :)

SteveB |

Sell on Audacity just like everyone else. Your content is more than worth it, go for it.

As I’ve told you before - nobody appreciates that which they get for free. You’ve made your point, you put out a great show. Now you better justify its value by making it a true resource instead of a free download

TStrompson |

I’d pay for a monthly CD. Four to five shows for a few bucks? I dunno man, you have a good touch for filtering out trash and getting to the point… Thats worth to me a lot.

happyfunboy |

steveb:

you mean audible.com, right?

Jeff Dempsey |

Since this has spun into paying for the podcast, my brother and I were talking about it (vis a vis a MLM business that charges $6-10/week for CDs), and I told him that as long as you are doing it for free, I’ll continue taking it. When you start charging, I have absolutely no problem with paying for it. A buck a week? Gladly. I make that back in knowledge and ideas in the first 50 minutes ;) oops, seconds.
