I’m not surprised with the Vista impressions, it is quite pretty. If businesses are stupid enough to be taken by eye candy there will be money in upgrade projects. If they can get the XBox team to help design the marketing campaign it just might be a hit.

The question in SMB will be two fold:
1) Will consumers buy direct from Dell or will they look to consultants
2) Will OEM’s stick to their bottom line Dell configuration which can hardly support basic graphics. IMHO, those will not get the same OS X eye candy effects and will likely lose even more sales to Apple.

Am I the only one not in complete disbelief when it comes to the general ineptutude of small business IT? These are people that lost their corporate jobs for a very good reason, what makes you think they’ll be any better just because they can get maybe a dozen hours a week at twice the sub $10 wage they were working answering phones for helpdesk and installing Word and Excel?

I’m stunned! 100+ SBS consultants that never ever deployed WSUS? People, please go back to removing spyware from uncle Bob’s home pc and installing 3 virusscanners for extra security while you’re at it..

I have WSUS deployed on SBS 2003 premium edition (which I am about to swing migrate – that might be fun).

Does anyone have any information on what the WSUS limitations in the R2 product would be? I have seen posts from microsft that say there is an option to get the wsus integration in R2 so I assume you can install SBS R2 without installing the wsus integration and install wsus by hand?

I do not think Best Buy / Geek Squad / Best Buy for Business and others have more than retail service in mind. Like us, they are just extending their retail service channel and moving up the deck from providing laptops and desktops to providing networks and servers. This is no different than what put most computer stores out of business, likewise, it will put most consulting shops out of business.

I’d love to get my hands on one of their proposals and see what the followup break and fix work is billed at… because if they are leaving servers out there and treating them like workstations I cannot imagine what the business does in a “down” situation.
