IT Business

Traveling sucks. But it is essential to a growing global business.

Also essential is the effective communication tool. Lets face it, cell phones no longer cut it. While sitting in the airport the extra few hours for no reason whatsoever (thanks terrorists) I got nothing better to do than run my business. So here I sit at DFW and delegate my little empire. So far I sold and set up 3 hosting contracts, assigned the buildout of four new servers, reviewed some project timelines and wrote a little shell script to manage expirations of iptables drops.

So what? Well, all of this can only be done easilly on a Windows Mobile device. However. more so than ever, I am seeing Blackberry out here. A lot of it too. Id say it easilly displaces the number of cell phones and smartphones all together. How come? I have no idea. But I am seeing executives, salesforce, young professionals.. without exception, most carry a brand new Crackberry. Interesting, not sure why though. Anybody?

People have the BlackBerry … because it is a status symbol. Windows Mobile devices are seen as toys, and why would anyone have a BLackBerry as a toy; clearly it is for business purposes only. Its not an MP3 player (sure it can play em now) and where’s the camera? I’ll keep my BB and continue to tether it when I’m at the airport.

They do email simply and constantly. Biz guys like the simplicity and they like the constant flow of email. Smart phones make you jump through too many hoops for email. At least that’s their perception.

Blackberries blow. As a former administrator of a 100 user BES, i know first hand that WIndows Mobile blows the pants off of them. Who would want to pay a ridiculous amount to a third party just to get your email synching? When I got the first five users, I was thought they were the shit, however, after I wrecked my truck while fiddling with it, I blamed it on the blackberry, and never picked up another. Today, I just LAUGH at people that are still using Blackberry, and I wish Nextel would release a Windows Mobile 6 phone with a full keypad. I have oodles of broken blackberry parts, JUNK!

Blackberries work better as an email appliance. In my experience Blackberries freeze far less frequently than Windows Mobile devices.

After using Windows Mobile, I would never go back to Blackberry. That being said, Windows Mobile SUCKS for reliability because most of the wireless carries hack the hell out of the devices to get their hooks into their customers. I wish a major provider would just let us buy devices the way they were meant to used and stop screwing with our productivity. Or maybe I should just buy the new iPhone and let it solve all my problems - BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (cough, cough).

A friend of mine, Alec Saunders (www.saunderslog.com) has a company called iotum that allows BlackBerry owners manage their phone calls. Very cool application. If you’ve got a BlackBerry, check it out.
