Help - Got cell phone painting tips?

Got a new cell phone for development, as usual, part metalic part plastic. I have a few issues I was hoping someone out there might have a few tips to share with me:

There are a few scratches on it and I was wondering if there was any way to “buff” those out. They are quite superficial but I’m not looking forward to having them tear a hole in my pocket or something.

Second, I’d like to paint the device. Don’t ask why. Any ideas, aside from “try a sharpie”?

The phone in question is a T-Mobile SDA (HTC Hurricane).

Check out Home Depot or Lowes. They have spray paint designed to stick to plastic. Mostly used for lawn furniture etc, but it should work fine on a plastic phone. Mask off the metal and anything you don’t want painted and spray away! :)

Model paint.

Not just model paint, but there’s model paint intended for flexible models (i.e. remote control cars). I don’t know the exact name, but find a hobby shop that sells the stuff.

Or just get rid of that clunker, pull out the creditcard and get a HTC Vox (S710).
God i love my new toy :-)

Yeah, it’s not too hard.

(1)Take the plastic housing apart from the electronics of the phone using whatever tool (torx keym hex key, etc) is necessary to remove all the little fasteners. Usually there are noly about 4-6 screws.
(Note: Paint fumes and vapors can damage the circuit cards and electronics, ruining your phone if you don’t disassemble the phone first.)

(2) Wipe the phone down with rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol and let dry. (You can lightly sand the plastic down before this step if you’ve got nicks or scratches in the actual plastic)

(3) Use acrylic model paint, or a paint like Krylon Fusion which is designed to bond with the plastic at a molecular level when applied. Acrylic with a clearcoat will get you the best results because it’s thinner and sprays more like an “airbrush” finish than Krylon. Check your hobby shops for acrylic plastic bonding paints. The kinds they paint plastic model cars are best.

(4) Tape off EVERYTHING on the housing pieces you don’t want paint to get on (camera lens, etc) using clear packing tape and an exacto knife. Packing tape sticks well, but cuts very well around corners and curves if you use the exacto model knife around the edges.

(5) Put the paint can in a few inches of warm water before starting to paint. This helps the paint atomize better in the can and you’ll see abig difference in the finish. The paint will spray more evenly. Also, make sure the spray can’s nozzle tip is 100% clean and clear. You don’t wan’t drips!

(6) Paint from about 5 inches away, using 2-3 thin coats. 30 minutes between coats is a good rule of thumb. Don’t go with more than 3 coats, including your clearcoat. It’ll end up thick and if you use a clearcoat on thick layers of paint, sometimes it’ll make the paint wrinkle up, ruining your project.

(7) Let dry for as long as possible (at least 12 hours). The longer the better. The more the paint cures before you start handling the pieces, the less the chance it’ll chip or be soft enough to get permanent fingerprints in it.

(8) Reassemble the housing around the electronics of the phone.

YOU’RE DONE!!

I painted my production silver phone in my favorite college team colors using the same method because nobody sold a housing for my team, and it cam out great!! I’ve had people ask me to paint their phones for them, but haven’t because phones are expensive and I’m fine if I mess up my phone, but wouldn’t want to drop or break someone else’s.

Good Luck on your painting!

I was thinking more like going to a place where they can do it professionally. I hate my color of my razr and I wanted it to be red instead of faded pink. :(
