		<description>Eric,

I will use that quote to explain what Vladville is from now on! &quot;Vladville: Thesis on pornography and its emerging technology enablers.&quot;

		<description>I actually got a real email asking a legitimate question about this post: What does Cogent have to do with BITS and where is the synergy between the technologies?

I can see that I didn&#039;t connect the dots. Adult entertainment web sites rely on serving their audience by offering streaming videos, thus a very expensive Internet connection. Streaming requires basically 1:1 bandwidth at the streamer as well as the end user. Go over and your video starts to lag, skip or buffer. Not good.

What porn sites tend to do is hold their content downloads on a cheaper link and their video streaming on a separate very expensive link.

Enter BITS and Cogent. Let&#039;s assume that you could charge a premium subscription by offering a Tivo-Like service with WHS. Instead of going out to the network to download the content, it would get pushed to you. But because it could now get pushed via BITS, instead of traditional http, it can support chunking, resumes, batches and pauses. It would be a more intelligent way of transferring data because it would not interfere with other network activity.

The pricing differential between a Cogent link and a Tier 1 link like Internap is 1:5, even at a very high commitment level.

So, using BITS would allow the adult entertainment industry to save money by reducing the operating costs because there would be far less streaming, and traffic could now be offloaded to the lower tier network provider. In turn, Microsoft would sell more servers and even more servers on WHS.

Either way, the post is a damn joke but the economic/technical argument is very real.
