Leszek_MS (Expert): A: Hello, I'm Leszek Mazur, one of the developers on the SBS team. hao_MS (Expert): Q: [6] SBS2003 premium with existing WSUS 2 installed. How will the upgrade handle that? Does that mean the SBS monitoring integration will not exist? A: If you choose to use the SBS settings, you will receive fully integrated monitoring report on WSUS related issues, such as update being downloaded, errors related to any update installtion, etc Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [8] Any chance of a "Dummies Guide" to security for the small business server administrator (ie. not technically minded,) perhaps a very simplified version of the Security Configuration Wizard for hardening the network? A: There will be a companion guide for the new SBS. surely, there will be a part on security. Stevenv_MS (Expert): Q: [7] SBS 2003 R2 claims that "SBS 2003 R2 offers the technology and tools to help you run your business more efficiently, improve employee productivity and reduce costs." -- Can one of the experts please elaborate upon this? -- I'm runing SBS 2003 release 1... A: SBS 2003 R2 is based on the SBS 2003 R1 Code Base (which has all the benefits you list above). In addition, R2 adds a few additional features, with the most major being network-wide update management - something we call "the green check" - SBS R2 will automatically patch your desktops and servers (both OS and apps) and let you know status of updates in the management console and the daily status mail Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [9] Fully Patched Existing SBS 2003 Premium edition utilizing exchange/sharepoint/isa 2004 (2 nics) etc. for about 18 users. We are seeing large amounts of memory being utilized by store.exe (exchange I think). Any tweaks available to help this situation? A: Exchange has it's own memory management. There is no way to tune store without creating reliability issues. I hate to give the typical answer but can you add memory? Guy (Expert): Q: [11] Has there been any enhancements to the remote workplace area so that users will only see machines that they are authorized to - ie: their own machine? A: A: The remote web workplace remains that same from SBS 2003 SP1 and unchanged in SBS 2003 R2 Chandana_MS (Expert): Q: [3] If I wanted to join this chat using Microsoft Chat instead of the browser, what would the server name and chat room be? A: TechNet Chat room Dean_MS (Expert): Hello, I'm Dean Paron, Lead Program Manager on the Windows Small Business Server team. Kevin_MS (Expert): Q: [10] I have a question around Exchange, on SBS R2 SP2 of Exchange 2003 will be supported, what about the next version of Exchange ? A: Yes - Exchange SP pack is part of the SBS R2 product. The next version of Exchange is not part of this product. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [12] Are there any plans for the next version (longhorn) of SBS server to only allow users to see ceartin machines in RWW? A: A: yes we are hard at work on the LH version of SBS, but it's not something you should expect in the next year. I'm not sure I understand your question about the RWW. Today you can choose who is assigned to which PCs Chandana_MS (Expert): For questions to be answered by MS Experts and for the responses to show up in the official transcript please click on "Ask the Experts" Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [13] Has there been any additions / enhancements to setting up the user environment? For example drive mappings, printers, etc. without having to resort to scripting or delving into GP? We like wizards... A: No, in R2 the setup environment is very similar to SBS 2003 SP1. Group Policy is still your best friend Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [16] What is the NDA beta policy on talking about new SBS R2 features, screenshots, etc leading up to the release? A: A: the NDA policy stops you form sharing anything with anyone practically. Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [15] How will the update service handle the other catagories in WSUS (i.e. def updates, etc.) A: the intial install sets critical and security updates only. in 48 hours we add all of the remaning classifications for detection. We are considering NOT including Drivers based on customer feedback. That decision is not closed just yet Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [14] In the past, I remember MS gave free upgrade to new software purchase after the annoucement of upgrade release. At the present time , I know their is a free R2 upgrade only for OEM version purchase. Why not extend that to retail SBS? A: Microsoft is moving to a model in which automatic upgrades are only available through SA. The current upgrade program is supposed to help the majority of our customers. Volume licensing and retail customers can acquire SA within 90 days of their purchase. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [18] Speaking of Memory - What will be the maxiumum amount of memory supported by R2? A: For R2, we'll be supporting the same maximum amount of RAM as we did for SBS 2003 SP1, which is the same as Windows Server. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [20] in R2 will the Blackberry's be support like ActiveSync and Mobile 5.0? A: The Blackberry support will be the same as in SBS 2003 SP1, you will either have to purhcase Blackberry Enterprise Server to get the same functionality that you can with Windows Mobile, or you will have to use the desktop redirector. As always, back-end functionality for Windows Mobile is included by default with Small Business Server. For additional help in configuring Windows Mobile 5.0 devices with SBS 2003, please see the WM5.0 deployment guide for SBS http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8be70d72-1e5a-4128-a30c-dafeeb43544d&displaylang=en hao_MS (Expert): Q: [15] How will the update service handle the other catagories in WSUS (i.e. def updates, etc.) A: By default, all categories will be approved for detection. And in SBS, a list of needed updates will be listed for you to approve to install. Critical, Security and Service packs can be configured to be automatically installed at scheduled time, also different automatic installation schedules and categories are supported for different computer groups (eg. server computers, client computers) Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [19] Waht about next version of Office and SBS R2 ? It will be supported ? A: A: the next version of Office, Office 2007 will work fine with SBS, however there are likely to be new Office 2007 features that don't light up with SBS. there will be new integration between Office 2007 and LH server, that will work with the LH version of SBS Kevin_MS (Expert): Q: [19] Waht about next version of Office and SBS R2 ? It will be supported ? A: SBS R2 will use WSUS to update the supported products. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [24] Guy: There is no NDA on the beta though - I do not recall signing one when I was added to msconnect... A: A: I think there is Kevin Beares [MS] (Expert): Q: [24] Guy: There is no NDA on the beta though - I do not recall signing one when I was added to msconnect... A: The NDA is in the EULA that you agree to when you install the SBS 2003 R2 bits. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [25] Will we be able to use the SBS login script without the end user being a local administrator? A: No, the behaviour is the same as SBS 2003, the end user is requird to be an administrator. We are considering this change for future versions of SBS. Dean_MS (Expert): Q: [17] Sorry - i was adding to the 1st question in regards to allowning users the ability to see authorized PCs, A: With respect to the RWW supporting greater mapping between users and individual machines, it's something we're definitely considering as we design the Longhorn version of SBS. Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [21] Is WSUS on R2 going to have problems with MS CRM SBE? A: I'm not aware of anything. Update Services in R2 will not fix any issues that exist in WSUS 2.0 today. Can you elaborate or send a pointer to any info on the issue you are referring to Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [23] What is the upgrade process from SBS Sp1 (-Exchange Sp2 - Sharepoint SP1) to R2? A: SBS R2 CDs will come with Exchange SP2 and SharePoint SP2, which you can install from the CD. However, if you already have these two service packs installed from the web or some other means, then you will be able to skip these two steps and jump straight to the R2 installation. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [30] Will there be any form of Windows Live OneCare included in the initial release of SBS R2, either in a client form (such as McAfee AV Enterprise for pure Antivirus work, or a Server side facility similar to McAfee E-Policy Orchestrator) A: A: We are thinking about offers with OneCare, but it won't be directly integrated, or shipping with the SBS CAL or SBS 2003 R2 Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [27] there is some confusion on enhanced R2 CAL, and how it applies to added servers for Standard. Can you confirm whether Exchange and SQL servers will be allowed under R2 CAL on SBS Standard? A: YES! If you have an SBS 2003 R2 (!), any edition, you are allowed to use your SBS CAL's to other Windows; Exchange 2003 SE and SQL 2005 WGE servers within your SBS environment. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [30] Will there be any form of Windows Live OneCare included in the initial release of SBS R2, either in a client form (such as McAfee AV Enterprise for pure Antivirus work, or a Server side facility similar to McAfee E-Policy Orchestrator) A: We don't have any plans to include Windows OneCare in R2, but obviously there are some benefits that are worth looking into for future versions of SBS. Leszek_MS (Expert): Q: [28] I'd like to break the 4 GB barrier in SBS. We run Premium now and use 3.2 GB of RAM, adding update service and SMB CRM will most likely hit up against this 4GB mark, any plans to go beyond the 4 GB mark in SBS? A: The next version of SBS will be 64bit and will be able to break that barrier. hao_MS (Expert): Q: [29] If I already have WSUS installed on a server (w/ SBS2K3 Premium SP1, Exchange SP2, etc.), what does R2 give me? A: One feature provided by SBS R2 that does not exist in WSUS is to have different auto-approval rules and installation schedules for different groups of computers. Eg. You want to automatically install critical, security updates on your client computers and reboot every night, while you may not want the same for your servers. In R2, you can do that. Leszek_MS (Expert): Q: [32] I saw earlier in the chat that the memory limit will not be increased past 4GB. I am not sure what "real world" customers you are targeting, but we see a LOT of our customers (including ourselves) needing this limit increased. A: This is a limit of the 32bit OS, the next version of SBS will be 64bit (x64) and will support more than 4GB Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [35] If we sell a Retail Boxed Copy of Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition (non SP1) that has been on our shelf for a while, will the customer receive a free upgrade to SBS 2003 PE R2 after it is released? A: A: A retail boxed copy doesn't apply to the technology upgrade program. the TUP, which is detailed on www.microsoft.com/sbs applies to OEM and System builder only ChrisPhillips-MS (Expert): Q: [22] Besides integrated WSUS, what is the feature upgrades of R2? A: We have expanded mailbox store in Exchange up 75GB, SRM, expanded CAL rights, and in Premium, SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [40] So in R2, I could have a 2nd Exchange server. Do my SBS cals cover that 2nd exchange server, or do i need additional Exchange Cals (sorry if this is redundant)? A: A: in R2 the SBS CAL covers you for that second Exchange server Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [39] Any hope of SBS R2 arriving on a DVD instead of 6-7 CD's? A: The first 5 or so CD's will also be available on DVD (in some languages, not all, but definitely english). This was the same with the current release. Dean_MS (Expert): Q: [36] Any plans to include MBSA scanning/reporting of cleint PCs to the SBS management interface, either in R2 or future releases? A: We continually work with the MBSA team to ensure that their tools report accurately within SBS environments, but at this time we don't have plans to integrate their scanning/reporting capabilities directly into the SBS management interface. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [41] I am unclear on what will happen to SQL 2000 when you install R2 - will it remain and SQL 2005 install alongside? What will SQL 2005 be used for? If if replaces SQL 2000, what will happen to the various existing instances and dbs? A: If you need to remain on SQL 2000, then stay with SBS w SP1. We don't, unfortunately, allow to you to mix and match the server versions. Only upgrade to SBS R2 if you want SQL 2005 WG Stevenv_MS (Expert): Q: [37] Can Exchange and SQL be broken out of SBS or do we have to purchase separate server licenses to use on additional machines? A: With SBS 2003 R2, we made a policy change that allows CAL rights to access external Exchange and SQL machines. R2 Premium also includes SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [43] Q for Guy - aren't you missing out on customers who have purchased a box copy of SBS from March 1st? Are they not getitng a raw deal because they did not purchase an OEM copy? A: That's true, but we simplify this for you by creating a set of policies and rules for you. We also created a simplified admin interface and integrated it with our reporting tools (such as the daily server status report) Stevenv_MS (Expert): Q: [45] is 75 GB mailbox for each user? A: No, total Exchange store is 75 GB - thus over 1 GB per user Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [44] Q for Guy - aren't you missing out on customers who have purchased a box copy of SBS from March 1st? Are they not getitng a raw deal because they did not purchase an OEM copy? A: A: Yes we are missing out on customer who have purchaed a retail copy. We designed the TUP for the 80% case, not the 20% case/ I you have one or two copies, Wayne, feel free to send them to me, and for you only I'll swap them hao_MS (Expert): Q: [29] If I already have WSUS installed on a server (w/ SBS2K3 Premium SP1, Exchange SP2, etc.), what does R2 give me? A: Also as what we always try to do in SBS, management tools/UI are provided for easy of use. Features we provided include to show a green check mark when all the computers in the SBS network are patched up to date, a daily report on what happened with WSUS, such as updates installed, errors if any, etc. Neil_MS (Expert): I've tried this myself and have not seen any problems (other than things just running relatively slowly). Bear in mind, though, that this is not a tested scenario and therefore not a scenario supported by Microsoft. Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [42] Next version of SBS, I assume this is LH SBS ? What is the tentative beta release date? A: it is too early to give you any estimate on a beta date for Cougar. (thanks for your interest though :-) ) Neil_MS (Expert): Q: [38] Are there any known issues to running SBSr2 in a virtual environment (ESX)? A: I've tried this myself and have not seen any problems (other than things just running relatively slowly). Bear in mind, though, that this is not a tested scenario and therefore not a scenario supported by Microsoft. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [47] MBSA currently requires you to install 05-051 with a /BP2QFE switch to get it to scan through the firewall and you have to adjust the XP sp2 group policy --- MBSA does not 'natively' work on a SBS network.. any plans to ensure it does in Longhorn era? A: The ISA x64 client is currently still in development. The ETA for the client is not known by our team at this time, or when it will be publicly available. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [34] I am mostly concerned with MS CRM SBE 3.0 and it's tight integration to SBS. Changes to either can be a huge challenge for testing. WSUS being only one piece. I know that WSUS is not going to recognize MS CRM in R2, but doesn't that bring a lot of risk ? A: We're constantly adding new products to Microsoft Update/WSUS. I'm not sure what the plan is for adding CRM, but even if it's not up today I'm sure it will be in the near future. Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [48] Does the Exchange memory limit of only using 2GBs go away? A: Have you tried the /3GB switch. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B328882 Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [49] Guy- the decision to force a customer into upgrading SQL to 2005 is a concern - in order to get the benefits of patching from R2, we should not have to force the customer to push to SQL 2005 A: A: I understand, and I wish I had more flexibility here. We have to be consistant here with SBS, and while I'm sure that you can raise some other arguments that are specific to SQL, we have to be consistant. You can choose SBS and remain on Windows Server 2000. You can't choose SBS 2003 and choose to remain on Exchange 2000, and you can't choose SBS 2003 R2 and remain on SQL 2000. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [51] Did I just read that right? With R2 we can move SQL and Exchange to separate servers? A: A: Sorry no. We are talking about expanding the CAL rights, not splitting apart the server. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [33] With SBS R2 PRemium ISA 2004 is valuable, what about ISA client for XP64Bits ? A: The ISA x64 client is still in development. The ETA and and public availablity is unknown today. The ISA team is working on getting it out ASAP though. Stevenv_MS (Expert): Q: [50] Q for Stevenv_MS - I'm not sure you answered whether or not the Exchange Server or SQL Server included in the SBS package can be installed on another machine. A: This change is a change in CAL rights only - you still need to purchase a separate instance of Exchange and/or SQL server. Before this change, you could only access other Windows Server boxes, now you can access SQL and Exchange in the same way. Chris-MS (Expert): Q: [26] Question for Chris - As the GM now for SBS - what new exciting things do you have planned for the product? A: Stay tuned, we promise to continue to wow you as the next release (codename Cougar) will be Longhorn based. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [54] Q for Guy - Like Wayne, I have one copy I'd like to swap too! A: A: the offer was for Wayne. but I'll honor it. Now for anyone else the answer is no. Kevin_MS (Expert): Q: [46] what is SRM? A: File Server Resource Manager . Please see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/R2/storage/default.mspx for more details. Dean_MS (Expert): Q: [53] Thanks for the explanation re SQL 2005 WG - what are the limitations or benefits of 2005 WG? Is there a licencing change reason behind calling it a WG version? A: I'd recommend that you look here for a breakdown of features across SQL 2005: Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [47] MBSA currently requires you to install 05-051 with a /BP2QFE switch to get it to scan through the firewall and you have to adjust the XP sp2 group policy --- MBSA does not 'natively' work on a SBS network.. any plans to ensure it does in Longhorn era? A: No changes planned for R2. We are working on a more comprehensive plan for managing updates. We hope that issues like this will go away Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [56] I have often been wary of the wizards, as it is not always clear what settings they are making eg. DNS Zone configuration, Internet and Email wizard. Is there a chance you can provide more detailed info to be able to troubleshoot the granular settings? A: When you run wizards like the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard, the finish page will have a link at the bottom that says something like "Click Here to see more info about the settings this wizard will make". We put a lot of information in there about every configuration action the wizard will perform. In our next release, we'll refine this even further, but be sure to check this out. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [60] In SBS, ISA2004, does it run on top of windows or windows run on top of ISA ? A: ISA runs on top of Windows . However, ISA has driver level peices that plug into the core system at the lowest level to ensure it captures all traffic on the network card and protects the box from the hardware layer up. Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [48] Does the Exchange memory limit of only using 2GBs go away? A: have you tried the /3GB switch. search for KBs on exchange /3GB for more details Dean_MS (Expert): Q: [53] Thanks for the explanation re SQL 2005 WG - what are the limitations or benefits of 2005 WG? Is there a licencing change reason behind calling it a WG version? A: I'd recommend that you look here for a breakdown of features across SQL 2005: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspx There are several new features most notably around Business Intelligence. Sean_MS (Expert): A: d Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [61] Thank you Charlie A: no problem Stevenv_MS (Expert): Q: [59] Regarding the CAL change - you say that it allows access to external Exchange & SQL. Do you have to buy additional licences to do this or can you use existing CALS and just buy the server product? A: You just buy the server product and you can use your existing SBS CALs. Dave Bishop [MS] (Moderator): Q: [58] Is there a chat log I can review all these chat later? A: The transcript will be posted in just a couple of days at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/chats/trans/default.mspx Chris-MS (Expert): I want to thank all of the MVPs and other quests who answer faster than we can Kevin_MS (Expert): Q: [57] Are there any issues upgrading from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005? We use front -end program in VB A: Not sure what the scope of your statement is for issues, but please check out http://www.microsoft.com/sql/solutions/upgrade/default.mspx for upgrade information Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [62] Asking my question about vertas another way... Does Vertas version 10 for SBS 2003 R2 premium work? (I am worried about sql changes) How about the beta? A: To get current status you really need to check with veritas. When I read this article http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/280204.htm it appears that they are testing veritas 10 on sql 2005. Are you concerned that the veritas version for SBS is different enough to require special app compat testing? Stevenv_MS (Expert): Q: [64] Hao said: "One feature provided by SBS R2 that does not exist in WSUS is to have different auto-approval rules and installation schedules for different groups of computers." Huh?? Of course it already exists in WSUS. Using GPO. A: Thanks for this feedback - definitely something we should look at as a possible scenario. We do have a "hosted" license for SBS today, but the product works best on premise. Dave Bishop [MS] (Moderator): A: Just a heads-up on time here, we’re now about halfway through today’s chat. Thanks Dave Bishop [MS] (Moderator): A: We encourage you to submit questions for our Experts. To do so, type your questions in the send box, check the “ask the experts” check box and click SEND. Questions sent directly to the Guest Chat room will not be answered by the Experts, but we encourage other community members to assist. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [69] When will SBS R2 become available under SPLA? A: A: SBS R2 will be available under SPLA from day one. We release all the SKUs at once, across all channels. To be careful here, I'm primarily talking about when the SKUs go on price lists, and not about when the first unit ships Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [52] Charlie - you are ducking Wayne's question about the Raw deal for customer that purchased box copy - they should have the same rights - generally they pay more for the software than those purchasing through OEM!! A: I (Winni) am not ducking. Just nog giving you the answer you would like and I am sorry about it but this is it. Most products dont have a technology upgrade program at all. Same for version upgrades. We are hoping this helps most customers. It is not a right you should assume to get. We could not make it available to all customers in all license types. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [71] Is the complete Windows Server 2003 R2 code included in SBS 2003 R2? A: No. We've had to evaluate the features of Windows R2 that make the most sense for SBS. We have this info on our FAQ as well http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/evaluation/faq/r2.mspx Leszek_MS (Expert): Q: [67] There was a report about a network break in via fax connection line in the past. Is the comm port fax line protected by the SBS firewall? A: The firewall will protect all TCP/IP network connections. It will not protect any non-network, serial connections. Chris-MS (Expert): Q: [68] Will it ever be possible to create a "virtualized" area on the sbs box to handle terminal server needs for small organizations without requiring a 2nd server? Virtualization of the ts functionality should help isolate sbs from the ts side of things. A: Yes, this is a capacity and performance issue more than anything else and is not for most of the segment of users because of complexity. We have known of sites doing this today. Dean_MS (Expert): Q: [78] fYI My customer was RAVING about RWW yesterday! Just thought you might like to know that they were extremely happy. A: Thanks, much appreciated. We always look to improve the RWW with more input from the community. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [73] is there going to be reporting of access via RWW in the daily report log? A: WSUS reporting is rolled up in the server status report. This report is available to all users who have permission to read the report through remote web workplace. Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [68] Will it ever be possible to create a "virtualized" area on the sbs box to handle terminal server needs for small organizations without requiring a 2nd server? Virtualization of the ts functionality should help isolate sbs from the ts side of things. A: depending on how you see this, this is already possible: you can install virtual server, with another Windows Server. We do not know yet if we can solve the security challenges of running Terminal services in application mode, simply on SBS. We will sure investigate it. We know it's high on the wish list. thanks for asking. Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [75] Winni - in the past - technology upgrades have NOT been limited to OEM - this is the first time it has. A: yes. that doesnt change my answer though. Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [70] Q62 yes, with sql integration of veritas and the changes to premium edition of SBS 2003 SQL component A: Ok.. I don't know the answer. You should check with veritas to find out. Stevenv_MS (Expert): Q: [76] What SBS + Office bundles should we expect to see? A lot of our clients are looking at Open Office to save costs and a bundled license may help convince them to not abandon Office. A: This is something that is driven by our channel partners. Agree it is a great combination and something we will look to encourage our partners to do. drspence-MS (Expert): Q: [63] Will R2 change the fact that when you go to localhost on the client machines it redirects to the SBS server? A: Shane: We're not familiar with this issue. Let me take a look into this and I'll respond offline. Please email me at: drspence@microsoft.com so I can respond back. Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [77] If you have a boxed SBS, can't you purchase SA for it within 30 60 90 days of date of purchase? A: YES! thanks you for asking. (it's 90 days) Dean_MS (Expert): Q: [74] Could someone please tell us what the benefit to upgrading to SBS 2003 PE R2 would be for someone who currently has SBS 2003 R2 SP1 with Exch SP2 and SharePoint SP2 and WSUS installed, but doesn't need to move Exch or SQL to another server? A: There are two major benefits, in my opinion. One is to get the full WSUS functionality integrated with the SBS managment and monitoring solutions. The other is to get the new BI feature and functionality provided for SQL 2005. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [82] Can you talk about AD changes? Specifically any new functional levels? Is there domainprep type mods to do? What about adding other DC's on Win2003SP1? A: We're not making any AD changes in R2. You've always been able to add additional DCs to an SBS network. Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [79] re virtualization - I am thinking of something a bit more integrated than VS. Basically a sandboxed area for ts needs that is tightly integrated into the sbs environment. A: yes. I thought that was what you wanted. As I said: we dont know this one yet. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [84] Sean: "is there going to be reporting of access via RWW in the daily report log? " I think OP meant to ask if remote access through RWW is going to be available in the daily report. A: Unfortunately there are no other changes to the report other than the addition of the status of WSUS. Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [80] I am still not clear on thwhat happens to my custom groups and rules in WSUS, is it an all or nothing opton, if I want the WSUS Console I have to lose all my customizations? A: when you install R2 we change the settings in WSUS. We have to set them in a specific fashion if we want to be able to tell you if things are working correctly. We also monitor if there are changes made to WSUS and will turn off Update Services if your changes are significant. If you are looking for the specific list and you are on the beta, pls post a bug to our beta connect site Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [83] Would you recommend a small Terminal Server virtualized, or a few XP Pro workstations virtualized and RWW? Which would have better performance? A: frankly I'd recomend the RWW and XP desktops, remote into the XP desktop Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [59] Regarding the CAL change - you say that it allows access to external Exchange & SQL. Do you have to buy additional licences to do this or can you use existing CALS and just buy the server product? A: you upgrade/but SBS R2. You buy SBS CALs, and you buy only the extra servers MikeLiptack[MS] (Expert): Q: [86] Can the R2 Beta be upgraded to the final product? A: you'll need to uninstall and then reinstall the final version (R2 uninstall only) Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [85] Suggestion: Can you setup a testlab for those of us who don't have the hardware/test space/etc opportunities to install and test R2. We can then remote in and test and give feedback. I know we can't give complete feedback. A: That sounds like a great idea - we'll definitely look at this. Thanks for the suggestion. Neil_MS (Expert): Q: [89] In a previous SBS session talking about R2, Microsoft mentioned "something' about BlackBerry support, elaborate please. Our goal is to not HAVE to purchase BES in order to sync email, contacts, calendars, etc., with our BlackBerrys. ??? A: There are currently no plans for blackberry suport. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [90] Can I use the new CAL options of SBS R2 with a seperate SQL Server 2000 installation? Do the CAL benefits only apply to SQL 2005? A: the expanded SBS CAL benefits only apply to SQL 2005 WG and that extra SQL 2005 WG must be in the SBS domain Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [88] Paul - have you documented what you refer to as "significant changes" to WSUS that will trigger Update Services switching off? A: They haven't been made public yet. We are making some changes to that list. The highest priority goal is to be correct when we tell you that your network is up to date. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [87] Q for Winni - We would like the ability to document all the settings of SBS (CIECW, backup schedules, password policies, license codes, shares, etc.) automatically in a single document (OneNote?) via a Wizard. Is this doable in the Cougar timeframe? A: We definitely understand that being able to document all the settings/actions performed on the server over time is a very useful change tracking feature. We're looking at how to solve this for the future (including Cougar) Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [91] Thanks, Guy. That was what I was planning, Actually. Small customer, non-profit. And really only needs a couple of desktops. A: A: great Kevin Beares [MS] (Expert): Q: [92] RE: Virtualisation.....I'd like to run SBS R2 as a virtual machine. I'd expect this would work fine, but until an evaluation is released, will Technet Virtual Labs host anything for SBS 2003 R2 for us to learn on? A: We will look into this. If we get it going in the near future we will blog about it on http://blogs.technet.com/sbs Stevenv_MS (Expert): Q: [72] Hao/Stevenv: can you elaborate please? I can create as many computergroups in the current WSUS as I want. What do you mean with hosted license? A: Hi Marina - can you describe your question in more detail? Neil_MS (Expert): Q: [94] can the exchange server be linked to a second exchange server (ie front end / back end or for redundency)? A: Yes. if you purchase a copy of Windows Standard Server and Exchange Server, you can split the roles in your org. Dave Bishop [MS] (Moderator): A: We have about 20 minutes left for today’s chat. If you still have questions for our Experts, please get them in as soon as possible. They will try to answer as many as possible in the time remaining. Thanks! Dean_MS (Expert): Q: [93] Anne Stanton asked this (without ticking the box - sorry if I missed a reply): How does R2 impact SharePoint? Particularly if SharePoint is using SQL? A: SharePoint's interaction story with respect to SQL 2005 is largely unchanged as compared to their interaction story with SQL 2000. In both cases, moving SharePoint data from a WMSDE backend to a full SQL backend enables full-text search capabilities. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [66] Can SBS run in as a Virtual Machine under Virtual Server 2005 or VS R2? Be very useful for trying it out. Is a beta available for us to preview in this environment or failing that under Technet Virtual Labs? A: Yes, some of our folks do this as well. We don't have a VS image available, unfortunately. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [81] The DR story of SBS.. issues of all on one box and including activation. We're getting more questions with only answer being third party solutions and good hardware. Besides it will be better in Longhorn, any other plans? RWW is too good not to have. A: The DR story will be improved for Longhorn. We currently don't have plans to make clusters of redundant or hotswappable servers, but we are trying to reduce the DR restore time drastically, and make recovery to new hardware better. We'll have to wait and see what happens. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): curt: are you asking about open value CAL licensing? Dean_MS (Expert): Q: [95] What new workgroup functionality will R2 ship with? Our clients want SBS w/ SharePoint to provide ths same functionality as WebEx Office out of the box! Will R2 make it easier to set up shared calendars, projects, etc.? How about SharePoint templates? A: SBS R2 includes the SP2 release for WSS. There aren't any additional site templates included in the installation by default, but as always any new site templates or webparts created in an ongoing fashion for all WSS customers can be applied to SBS installations. I'd recommend looking here for the latest updates: http://www.sharepointcustomization.com/default.aspx hao_MS (Expert): Q: [96] Hao/Stevenv: look back at the first answer from Hao on my questioning him about R2 making it possible to use several groups, while he stated WSUS couldn't do that. A: In WSUS 2.0, no matter how many groups you have, you have only one auto approval rule. You can manually approve updates for different groups, but if you want o approve automatically, you can only do the same for all groups with WSUS 2.0, while in SBS R2, it is supported. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [99] What changes are being made in SBS2003 R2 to cater for Windows Mobile 5 devices? A: A: all the latest Windows Mobile 5 support get picked up with the intration of Exchange SP 2 Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [99] What changes are being made in SBS2003 R2 to cater for Windows Mobile 5 devices? A: With the addition of Exchange SP2, Windows Mobile 5 feature pack devices have become very exciting. Always-up-to-date functionality has been improved to not use SMS messages (so it won't cost you a fortune), the sync of Tasks over the air. In addition you'll be able to control devices remotely, configure remote wipes of the device and require password protection. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [100] Has a price been set yet for the upgrade to R2? A: A: Pricing for SBS R2 has not yet been announced. It will be shortly before launch. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [103] Hao/Stevenv: (q 96) can we discuss this some more? I am on the R2 beta and I really don't understand what you are saying here. If you prefer to do that offline, fine with me. A: Definitely, you know how to get a hold of us offline. :-) Chris-MS (Expert): Q: [102] Is R2 going to be the only SBS server availalbe to buy after release, or will I still be able to purchase R1 A: Yes. Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [98] Has a strategy been developed for how to sell a client the SBS Office bundle and not have to repurchase SBS Cal for the first 5 users? A: I am assuming you are talking about buying SBS in Open Value. We have a communication challenge here. We will not provide an SBS server without the 5 CALs (it's not in the works). So, instead, we have adjusted pricing so OV still offers you the best deal. We realize that doesnt land well with customers. Our colleagues of volume licensing are working on building better communication. For now, that's all we can do. It was either did or no Small Business SKU at all. I am very sorry for the confusion. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [101] Guy - so will the Configure Mobile Device Wizard work with Mobile 5 devices in SBS 2003 R2? A: Unfortunately the new WM5 smartphones do not support self signed certificates. You will either have to push the self-signed certificate to the device manually via another method, or use a trusted 3rd party certificate. SBSMOBCFG will still configure the connection settings. hao_MS (Expert): Q: [105] In the current version of WSUS (v2.0), it -IS- possible to assign "Auto-approve for detection" to selected groups, and to assign "Auto-approve for Install" to a different list of seleted groups. I, too, am failing to see the difference. A: But you can not have two auto approve to install rules. What if I want to auto install service pack on one group but not the other? Chandana_MS (Expert): StillGrey can you pleas click on Ask the Expert MikeLiptack[MS] (Expert): Q: [104] Will there be any (public) documentation on sysprep deployments for SBS R2? A: there will be an addendum to the existing OPK, which describes the details of how to do this. It's in the system builder SKU..... Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [106] Have you thoguht about offering the ability to switch the type of CAL from User to Machine without penalty starting with R2? A: the first 5 you can switch once. additional CALs you buy are user and/or machine specific. We are constantly listening to comments from customers and partners so these request do come in. However, right now there are no plans to change this policy. Chris-MS (Expert): Q: [107] yes what Chris? A: Yes, R2 will be the only version we will offer through the channel for sale post release. There might be a slight channel delay depending on the channel. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [108] Q 6 - With an existing WSUS 2 enabled SBS 2003 SP1 system during the upgrade to SBS 2003 R2 will the upgrade handle that or will it see pieces opf WSUS there and bomb. Hence I will not be left with the reporting integration. A: We will detect an existing installation of WSUS and not muck with your settings during install. If you want our simplified admin, however, you're going to have to take our default policies. Stevenv_MS (Expert): Q: [97] Stevenv/Hao: Q64 A: SBS is available via our "Services Provider Licensing" (SPLA) program. There are companies that do host SBS, and it works pretty well in many ways. One of the complaints we have heard from people who use this model is issues with CAL activation from the customer site because there is not an easy way to abstract multiple "sites" from one instance of SBS, and CALs are only sold in packs. Guy_MS (Expert): Q: [109] Why is it that we have to wait so long into this cycle to understand cost of R2 -- if we need to talk to our NON SA clients, the first question they ask is .. what will it cost? A: A: Pricing is something that MS typically leaves to late in the cycle. Since we are so open with product features, and betas. Pricing becomes one of the mechansim that we use to drive press coverage at either RTM or first customer ship Chandana_MS (Expert): no worries Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [110] : I was lead to belive that the AUTD functionality required a firmware upgrade to work in addition to SP2. As in I have SP2 and it still uses SMS? A: Always Up to Date (AUTD) requires Exchange SP2 on the server, and Windows Mobile 5 feature pack on the device. Your WM5 device is probably not the feature pack and hence why it's still using SMS. You should contact your mobile operator to see if they offer an upgrade of your device to the feature pack. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [112] Firmware/Mobile 5.0 upgrade to my Pocket PC Phone A: In order to get the WM5 feature pack, you'll have to contact your mobile operator and ask if they support an upgrade for your device. Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [111] Winni - How about greatly discounting the first 5 SBS OV Platform CALs a company purchases to help compensate for the 'double purchase' issue? A: Ken: the discount is in the price already. What is difficult to do, is to have all of the discount in the first 5. Logistically, this is not worth it. Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [114] How can people get SQL 2000 /SBS 2003 sp1 then for downlgrade rights? You just said R2 will be the only version sold? A: When you purchase an SBS 2003 R2 license, you can request downgrade rights to SBS 2003 SP1. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [116] Like Verizon even knows what active sync is, much less AUTD or a feature pack A: It will probably depend on whom you speak with at Verizon. Simply walking into a Verizon store probably won't get you the answer. You might have to ask for the expert on the windows mobile devices. They sell them, so they have someone who understands them. Dean_MS (Expert): Q: [118] What are the plans for incorporating VOIP / Automated Attendant / Unified Inbox features to SBS? A: There are no plans for VOIP integration to be a part of SBS 2003 R2. At this time we're still building our complete feature list for the Longhorn release of SBS. Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [117] Will the WSUS V2 reporting tie into the SBS Reporting (email to administrator) to give a very quick and neat report on the overall network health? This feature has been REALLY helpful by the way....ie. Love the Simplicity A: The status of Update Services will be included in the Server Status Report. We didn't add any email alerts except to let you know if the core wsus service is not running Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [119] Is there any plans to incorporate SMS (Systems Mangement Server) back into SBS? It was a great asset to have in SBS 2000 and with a 75 user cap, the load is barely noticable. A: I don't believe we ever included SMS in Small Business Server. You may be confusing it with BackOffice Server 2000, which was focused on much larger companies. While SMS is great in certain scenarios, the added cost of including it in SBS would be prohibitive to most small businesses Chris-MS (Expert): Q: [113] Chris - you mentioned SRM is being added to SBS 2003 R2 - when did this change and what functionality will it give our clients? A: In case some of the folks missed my answer about features in R2. A new one I mentioned is we put the SRM feature of WS03 R2 and added it to SBS R2. We evaluated the other WS03 R2 features and felt that the rest were not relevant enough for SBS R2. In addition to the SRM features of additional quota capability (directory quotas, data screening, and reporting), it also means that .Net 2.0 and MMC 3.0 (interesting for application developers) is available. Dean_MS (Expert): Q: [119] Is there any plans to incorporate SMS (Systems Mangement Server) back into SBS? It was a great asset to have in SBS 2000 and with a 75 user cap, the load is barely noticable. A: There aren't any plans to incorporate SMS into the SBS product. Though at one time it was a part of the BackOffice Server suite, in SBS we plan to continue to build around WSUS. Sean_MS (Expert): Q: [122] Regarding Verizon - Their website has a link to a document for Exchange installations and it says to use their own Wireless Sync application on a desktop machine that will always be on. It knows nothing of the features available in Exchange 2003 SP2! A: Verizon is providing a blackberry like functionality to get you your email and calendar items over the air. Not all of their customers who buy smartphones want to have a server infrastructure to manage on the back end. Chris-MS (Expert): Q: [115] Chris - when will the Cougar feature list be released? A: We have no date set at this time, but will be engaged via tech previews and betas via MVPs and other highly interested parties. Paul Fitzgerald MS (Expert): Q: [105] In the current version of WSUS (v2.0), it -IS- possible to assign "Auto-approve for detection" to selected groups, and to assign "Auto-approve for Install" to a different list of seleted groups. I, too, am failing to see the difference. A: In wsus you can pick a list of update classifications and then choose a set of groups. So Critical and Security for servers and clients. But you can't configure something like this. Critical and Security for servers and then separately Critical, security and Service Packs for Clients. We cover that case. Winni Verhoef (Expert): Q: [123] Vonexus has a SBS Integrated VoIP System A: correct Charlie [MSFT] (Expert): Q: [124] SBS 2000 included SMS 2.0. Said it right on the box. Had it at a client. A: Wow. I'll have to go back and look at my SBS 2000 box. We have no plans to include anything with SMS in SBS in the future. Dave Bishop [MS] (Moderator): Q: Time reminder: about 5 more minutes remaining for our chat today.
