Exchange, Vladville

I've added a few more articles for commonly answered questions in the Microsoft Exchange 2003 newsgroup. They are linked in. How do I change how my name appears on messages I send out through Exchange? How do I deliver Exchange email to an external mail account? How can I customize the size of my OWA Scratch pad? SMTP Protocol / IMF Event Error 7514 with error code 0×800004002 Which features do I get with Windows Mobile 5 MSFP? How do I configure Outlook 2003 & Exchange 2003 for password protected SMTP relay? As a side note, William Lefkovics has a link to a few E12 webcasts that have aired so far. They are extensive (1:30 each) so if you're in the mood check them out.

Why is it that every time I post something even remotely technical I only hear crickets around here. Post a pic of Ashlee Simpson and I get a 12 post thread. Article on Exchange, 0 posts, article on Microsoft piracy 10 posts.

Wtf is everyone doing out there, have all the techie people died?

I usually just leech info and don’t return so here’s a first. I have for some time been using the method in the first article re the rename method for Display Name of a User as part of a procedure for continuity of data, mail and profiles for employees.

What’s it good for I here you ask.

A long time ago I started using role based naming for my customers login accounts e.g. “ap” for Account Payable Clerk rather than the employees name and with a combination of the rename and adding individual email addresses I have accounts which do not die with a user resigning or being promoted. The next incumbent inherits the home drive, email and profile of the last user, not always a bonus but often enough that this method is seen as a benefit.

1. Create the login as a short role name.
2. Make the Display name the current user of this role.
3. Make a Recipient Policy based on Display name. Which will be the default.

I end up having accounts that look and feel individual but survive the change of employees quickly and without the mess involved in moving info from one user to another.

I also use the role email address e.g ap@company.com.au as the one that goes on all users external references e.g. websites, business cards etc.

The last users email address is also left in the list of email addresses incase anyone had the user listed by their name, that way no email gets lost either.

Nothing startling but it works well for me and is probably what a lot of people do anyway.

If you have outlook 2003 cached you will need to rebuild the offine address book on server and then download it to the local machines before the user name change will display correctly. This usually happens overnight and is updated the next morning at login.

Cheers
