Neat way to offer Remote Assistance

Now this is very cool. One of my partners, Travis Creighton, posted this on a mailing list and it is very cool. You know how the Remote Assistance game works, right? You have to ask them to go into Help & Support center, request assistance, mail it to you, etc? Well, Travis found a way to get into the box without making the user create a request:

I found how to bring up the "Offer Remote Assistance" app w/o navigating to the "Server Management" app. (I know…I'm breaking the 70-282 rules.) The sweet thing is that I can use this URL on my XP workstation and not have to first connect to the server in order to 'offer' Remote Assistance. And without this URL, I had to talk them through sending me an invite. Here is the jewel (copy and paste it all on the same line):

hcp://CN=Microsoft%20Corporation,L=Redmond,S=Washington,

C=US/Remote%20Assistance/Escalation/Unsolicited/UnSolicitedRCUI.htm

Neat, eh?

Update 4/21/2006: Thanks Charlie, the URI has been fixed; I moved my blog to a different platform over the weekend and it mangled the spacing in the blog during the post import. The one above should work now without a problem but remember to eliminate any spaces and paste it all on the same line..

Why not just RDP in?

Vlad |

Because for RDP you need the credentials and you start a new session which makes it impossible for the person you are “assisting” to see the screen or show you what the problem may be. Not to mention that most people just do not even have a password on their XP boxes.

Dude, that is mega-sweet! I’m gonna steal it and use it in a webcast, but I’ll give you guys the props. :-)

Great but does not work for me in my LAN environment:

I can currently ask for “remote assistantance” using msn from the “user workstation” to the “expert workstation”. That connects up just fine.

That proves the firewall is opened up. When the screen comes up I try to “Connect” using an IP address. I simply get no response.

These workstations are not in a domain environment

Could you post the original newsgroup post. Thanks

Vlad |

Thats the whole post;

When you “request” it opens a port. The issue with “forcing” it is that if a firewall is in a way it will not accept a RA connection unless it was requested first. Take a look at your firewalling.

Worked here! Thanks!

Awesome find! Thanks Travis!

I’ve been using UltraVNC for some time with limited success as well.

Thanks for the great tip :)
I have been using Ultra VNC SC to provide a basic helpdesk service to many users.

VNC SC requires the users to instigate the connection but it is very easy for them to use.

Keep up the good work all

Check out UltraVNC for remote support - you can compile your own client!

If you are going down the VNC path then look at GenControl http://www.gensortium.com/products/gencontrol.html
It allows you to VNC to a box that doesn’t have VNC installed, without requesting permission from the end user, and uninstalls itself afterwards. Usual caveats of firewalls, requiring administrator-level access and an RPC connection apply.

Hi,

Tried, failed. I get a screen that says ::
Help and Support Center
Cannot display the page
The page you were trying to view has an incorrect address and cannot be displayed. Please try another page.

Charlie Brown |

Woot - found the issue. The link you have above is incorrect and contains “%20″ characters and also a space after “S=Washington,”. Remove that additional space, change the “%20″ chars to spaces, and it works.

Or press F1 (while on desktop)/ click start - help, type offer in the search then click on the link.

Doesn’t work for me. I get a message “Automation server can’t create object”.

Quick Google suggests installing latest Windows Scripting (5.6). Haven’t done that yet.

Should I?
